Latest News: 3,000 EV Charging Stations Coming to Pakistan
Good news for electric vehicle owners: the federal government plans to set up around 3,000 public EV charging stations in Pakistan by 2030. The target was shared by the Ministry of Industries and Production in a written reply to the National Assembly, in response to a question from MNA Malik Shakir Bashir Awan.

Lack of charging points has long been the biggest worry for people thinking about an electric car, e-bike or e-rickshaw. This plan, which comes under the NEV Policy 2025-30, aims to fix that problem step by step, starting with the busiest motorways and highways.

EV Charging Stations in Pakistan: The 2030 Target
Here is a quick overview of what the ministry has shared so far:
| Plan Item | Details |
|---|---|
| Total public chargers by 2030 | Around 3,000 stations |
| First phase | 40 fast-charging stations |
| Where first | Motorways and selected sections of the N-5 |
| Distance between chargers | About every 50 km on major highways |
| Charger types | Fast, Level 2 and Level 1 |
| Two/three-wheelers | Battery swapping stations |
Fast Chargers on Motorways Come First
In the first phase, the government wants EV fast chargers on motorways and on chosen parts of the N-5 national highway. With a charger roughly every 50 kilometres, long-distance travel in an electric car becomes far more practical. Some progress is already visible, as one major motorway recently got ultrafast charging units.
Fuel Stations Will Be Encouraged to Add Chargers
Under the policy, petrol pumps will be encouraged to install EV charging units. This makes sense because fuel stations already have land, power connections and staff. The government also wants to expand Level 2 and Level 1 chargers, which are slower but cheaper and useful in cities, offices and parking areas.
Battery Swapping for E-Bikes and Rickshaws
The plan is not only about cars. Battery swapping stations are planned for electric two-wheelers and three-wheelers. This could be a game-changer for e-bike riders, delivery workers and rickshaw drivers, who cannot wait hours for a battery to charge. Instead, they could swap an empty pack for a full one in minutes.

Incentives for Private Investors
To attract businesses, the government is offering several benefits for electric vehicle charging investors:
- A dedicated commercial electricity tariff for charging stations.
- Faster electricity connections for new charging sites.
- Public-private partnerships, including viability gap funding.
- Last year, around 3,800 investors showed interest in building charging stations across the country.
Recycling Old EV Batteries
The policy also covers what happens to batteries at the end of their life. It includes collection, transport, reuse, dismantling and recycling of lithium-ion batteries. The ministry says a regulatory framework and a nationwide network of collection and recycling centres are being worked on, which is important for keeping the EV shift clean and safe.
What This Means for E-Bike Buyers
More chargers and swapping points mean less range anxiety, and that makes an electric two-wheeler an even smarter choice. If you are planning to buy one, start by checking the PM electric bike scheme, the eligibility criteria and the documents required.
